2013 Festival Spotlight – Workshops by thoughtbubblefestival

We’re continuing our look at some of the events taking place as part of 2013’s Thought Bubble, this time focusing on some of the creative workshops that are running during the festival week! The full programme of events has 90 separate entries of comics related fun, and we want to make sure that you experience as much of it as possible as help us celebrate our biggest Thought Bubble ever!

Our programme of workshops is made possible in no small part thanks to the generous funding granted to us by Arts Council England, and the help of our partners at Leeds Libraries, Playful Leeds, and our amazing workshopeers Art Heroes, HexjibberImproper Books, Matt Dyson, Neill Cameron, and everyone at The Phoenix. Monday 18th November

Cartoon Workshop with Matt Dyson

Keighley Library, 1315-1415, selected schools, 6-10 year olds, FREE

Amazing Cats & Super Dogs! Join Comic Artist Matt Dyson (creator of “Moo & Keo” and the “Today Let’s…” series) as he guides the group through the process of creating and drawing a new superhero team based around our favourite furry friends!

This workshop is full subscribed, but if your school would like to be involved for 2014’s events, please contact Debbie Moody.

Drink Squash and Draw

Leeds Central Library Exhibition Space, 1700-1900, young people and families, FREE

Join Comic Artist Matt Dyson (creator of “Moo & Keo” and the “Today Let’s…” series) for a fun and informal drop-in session, where we want to see you come up with the wildest creations you can imagine!

All materials will be provided, and assistance will be on hand for anyone who wants to hone their skills.

Tuesday November 19th

Cartoon Workshop with Matt Dyson

Leeds Library Art Reading Room, 1730-1930, families and young people, FREE

Join Sarah from Wessenden Woollies, designer extraordinaire, and learn to crochet and create your very own cute voodoo doll in only 2 hours!

Each participant can take home and keep their creations. All materials provided. All are welcome, but the crochet session is recommended for 16+ individuals, however families are very welcome as there will be colouring-in sessions running at the same time to keep young children occupied.

Vampire Knitting

March of the Robots!

Travelling Man Lounge, 1st floor, 107 Kirkgate, Leeds, LS1 6DP, 1730-1900, 12-16, FREE but space is limited, so please sign up beforehand

Can you imagine Leeds in the near future? What would it look like if it were run by robots? What would it be called? Who would be in charge? Our super hero illustrator Kristyna Baczynski will be with you to help dream up this future vision, and create your own fantastical story of robots and their wild adventures.

Art Heroes @ Thought Bubble 2013

Art Heroes will be running their Thought Bubble Creating Characters Competition for the second year in a row, so pop by their table in Armouries Hall for a worksheet and return it by the end of the weekend for your chance to win a very special goodie bag!

And while you’re there make sure to take a look at Halcyon and Tenderfoot – a great comic for fans of all those superhero films and cartoons.

How To Draw (Awesome) Robots

Learn to draw amazing androids and magnificent Mecha! In this workshop, comics artist and giant robot afficionado Neill Cameron (Mo-Bot High, The Pirates of Pangaea, How To Make Awesome Comics) shares some of his top tips for drawing robots and the gets you started making your own robotic comics adventures. Along the way we’ll learn a little about some basic principles of figure-drawing-without-a-model – an essential skill for all comics artists! – and also quite a lot about the importance of rocket launchers.

Become a comic book colourist and help colour B&W versions of Knight & Dragon, by Matt Gibbs and Bevis Musson, and learn tips for creating your very own fairy tale and medieval characters!

Voyage through deepest darkest space in a giant cat space ship, battle pirates on the back of prehistoric monsters, or catch up with the recently exhumed for a quick interview… but hang on… this isn’t a delirious dream but a small sample of the adventures The Phoenix weekly story comic takes children on every week!

Make sure that you come and see us at this year’s Thought Bubble where you can catch up with some of your favourite Phoenix artists and learn some of their top secret comic creating tips! You can then put that knowledge to good use by entering your own creations to The Phoenix Zoo of Awesomeness. Think Alien Aardvarks, Monster Meerkats or even Ninja Narwhals! Don’t worry, if you can’t think of an amazing animal, The Phoenix boffins have brought along their patented comic-creating device ‘The Wheel of Awesomeness’ to help!
