Thought Bubble 2014 Festival Spotlights: Live Events by thoughtbubblefestival

Our series of spotlight features on the events taking place as part of 2014′s Thought Bubble rolls on, today looking at some of the live events that will take place during the festival week! The full programme of events is our most diverse ever, with over 80 ways for you to get involved and join in the comics-related fun and hijinks!

Wednesday 22nd October

Thought Bubble Charity Anthology 2014

Monday 10th November

The Rainbow Age: LGBQT* Comic-book Club

Wharf Chambers, Leeds, LS2 7EQ, 18:30-20:30, 15+, FREE

Join us for a celebration of LGBQT* comics & creators with an informal book club evening! Bring along your favourite LGBQT* comics, or come and discover something new from our collection, kindly supplied by Travelling Man.

Meet like-minded fans and make new friends over cake and comics. After this event, Travelling Man will be donating all the books to Leeds Libraries to create a completely unique collection for the whole of Leeds to enjoy; the first of its kind in the country.

All are welcome, so come along for a relaxed atmosphere and to read some amazing, life-changing comics!

Wednesday 12th November

Dr Sketchy’s, Leeds presents The Sketch of Thrones

Belgrave Music Hall, LS2 8JP, 1900 – 2100, 18+, £6 (£4 if in costume)

Lord Sketch of the House of Dr Sketch is opening the doors to Castle Belgrave to challenge any patron of Thought Bubble 2014 to test their skill, agility, stamina and most of all sketching skills to have a chance of taking his place upon the leaded throne.

Any house is welcome to compete; Anime, Marvel, DC, Cosplay, LOTR and any other super hero, villain or invented persona (that means we welcome costumes in any style or theme). All you need to do is turn up brandishing pen, pencil, paint and paper and we shall do the rest. Any artistic ability is welcome (you don’t have to be able to draw – just have a good time!).

There will be burlesque entertainment and our in-house models for the evening will be there to provide creative inspiration: Midori Dusk; a sultry siren from where the darkness falls, and Chev Roulette; a wildling from beyond the wall.

Comics Forum Academic Conference Day 1

Leeds Library Exhibition Space, 0900 – 1645, recommended for 16+ (some talks unsuitable for under 18s)

The themes of conflict and violence are common in comics, as are the debates around the depiction of them and their impact on readers’ minds. 2014’s Comics Forum, the sixth event in the annual conference series, tackles the subject of violence in comics, with two days of talks by experts from around the world!

Tickets are priced as follows:

1 day (13th or 14th November): £10

2 days (13th and 14th November): £20

4 days (2 day Comics Forum pass + 2 day Thought Bubble pass): £40 (this is a saving of £4 on the cost of the tickets if bought separately)

Creative Network & Thought Bubble present… In Conversation Adam Hughes and Matt Forsythe

Leeds College of Art, 1800-2030, 18+, FREE (£5 deposit required)

Adam Hughes (U.S.A.) is renowned for his female characters and work for DC Comics, Marvel Comics, Dark Horse Comics Lucasfilm among others. He will discuss the variety of work he has completed in his career and how he went from being completely self-taught to becoming one of the most celebrated comic book artists in the world.

Matt Forsythe (U.S.A.) is the lead designer on the hugely successful Cartoon Network show Adventure Time. He is also the award winning creator of Ojingogo, Jinchalo and has worked as an illustrator for publications such as the NY Times and Wall St Journal. Matt will discuss his creative journey and provide an insight of what it is like behind the scenes at the Adventure Time studio.

Thought Bubble, along with Travelling Man: the UK’s friendliest comic stores, are very pleased to be able to invite all attendees of this year’s festival to an informal night of drawing and drinking.

Thought Bubble Book Crossing 2014

Various locations across Yorkshire (please see below for details), from 1000, all ages, FREE

Thought Bubble is once again teaming up with Diamond Comics, Travelling Man, and Viz Media to give away FREE all-ages graphic novels and comics to everyone to keep in order to achieve our aim to get everyone reading more!

Libraries taking part are: Leeds, Wetherby, Moor Allerton, Chapeltown, Garforth, Bradford City, Keighley, Ilkley, Shipley, Bingley, Wyke, Wibsey, Manningham, Baildon, Burley, Clayton; Laisterdyke, Menston and Holmewood.

Just pop along to any of the libraries participating, and pick-up some great comics for free, to take home and read, or give to a friend!

Leeds International Film Festival presents Show Pieces with Alan Moore and Mitch Jenkins

Alan Moore, one of the greatest graphic novelists of all time, will attend LIFF28 with Show Pieces, his new film collaboration with director Mitch Jenkins. From the creator of ground-breaking works including Watchmen, The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen, From Hell, and V For Vendetta, the three-part Show Pieces is Alan Moore’s first endeavour written specifically for the screen and made with his ongoing creative involvement.

Show Pieces was brought to life by award winning photographer turned-director Mitch Jenkins and is set within a nightmarish alternative version of the creators’ native Northampton.

In the gathering darkness of the forest, strange spirits light the way ahead…

Come and join us in the Kodama Woods, a unique space inspired by the films of Hayao Miyazaki where you can relax away from the hustle and bustle of the convention, amid a magical woodland area designed and built by artist Tom Eglington.

Perfect for all ages, the woodland is the ideal place to soak up the magical atmosphere or explore your creativity with our lamp-making workshop. Design and construct your very own Kodama lamp to add to the wood spirits that populate the trees, and witness the magic unfold over the weekend.

The Kodama Woods project was made possible by a generous grant from Leeds Inspired, an initiative of Leeds City Council that seeks fund cultural projects that create high quality, accessible cultural experiences for Leeds’ residents and visitors alike.

Image Comics Pitch Reviews with Eric Stephenson

This year we are delighted to announce that Image Comics will once again be reviewing pitches for new series at Thought Bubble!

Because of time constraints, the format for reviews will be as follows: Your pitch must be emailed in advance, and if you’re selected, you’ll be called back for a full review by Publisher of Image Comics Eric Stephenson.

Please submit your portfolio to portfolioreviews@thoughtbubblefestival.com by 5pm, Friday 7th November. A confirmation email will be sent before the convention specifying times/location for successful applicants.

Mondo @ Thought Bubble 2014

Mondo – champions of innovative movie poster design – are returning to Thought Bubble! Following their incredibly popular attendance at 2013’s festival, they’ll be partnering up with artist Matt Taylor, who will also be in attendance, to release an exclusive poster for Thought Bubble attendees. Utilising the talents of world-class artists and designers, Mondo produces limited edition, screen-printed posters based on all things film, television and comic properties including Star Wars, The Avengers, DC Comics, Back to the Future, and Universal Monsters. Based in Austin, TX, Mondo operates out of a permanent gallery space hosting regular exhibitions featuring breathtaking original artwork and limited edition screen prints.

Art Heroes @ Thought Bubble 2014

Art Heroes specialise running comic book workshops and making comics all age groups can enjoy, and this year they’ll be running their annual Thought Bubble Creating Characters Competition for the third time!

To celebrate their new strip, Monster Book, from the comic Endangered and Other Strange Stories, they’re asking you to create your own scary creatures. So for a chance to win a special prize, pop along to the Art Heroes table in Armouries Hall for a worksheet and return it by the end of the weekend.

Emma Reynolds’ Picture Consequences Workshops

Royal Armouries Hall, all ages, FREE for under 12s but an accompanying ticket holding adult must be present

Join character designer Emma Reynolds in an interactive ‘Picture Consequences’ workshop and create your own characters!

Two or more players begin by drawing the head of a character (be it animal, human, robot, alien, food… anything you like!) Everyone then folds over their paper and passes it on to the next person to draw each body part in turn. At the end the paper is unfolded and the original, unexpected and hilarious characters are formed!

An accessible game for all ages and abilities, all materials provided.

Jampires Present: Comics Jamtastic!

Royal Armouries Hall, all ages, FREE for under 12s but an accompanying ticket holding adult must be present

Make comics with children’s book and comic creators Sarah McIntyre and David O’Connell in this family-friendly area!

Find out from these co-authors how they collaborated on their JAMPIRES picture book through a Comics Jam session, and join other people in creating your own characters and setting them loose in interactive comics-inspired games. Both authors will have a range of their books on sale and available to sign, including JAMPIRES, the picture book, and a limited, self-published edition of the comic that inspired it, Jampires: the Great Doughnut Mystery.

They recommend that children under the age of 8 be accompanied by an adult.

British Comic Awards Prize-Giving Ceremony 2014

Wondering who’s responsible for the year’s Best Comic or Graphic Novel? Looking for a New Talent to shake up your bookshelf? Fancy seeing the best and brightest of UK comics all in one place?

The fourth annual British Comic Awards Ceremony will take place as part of this year’s Thought Bubble Festival, and exhibitors and attendees of the show will be welcome, alongside the nominees and judges of this year’s shortlist.

There’ll be a short ceremony – with the presentation of four awards to the winner of each category, as well as a look at the career of this year’s inductee to the BCA Hall of Fame.

Thought Bubble + Fanomenon Mid-Con Party

As part of our biggest Thought Bubble yet, 2014’s mid-convention party is moving to a new home at Leeds’ Town Hall! Taking advantage of the wonderful (and huge!) space in the Victoria Hall, this year’s party will be the perfect place to unwind after a busy day on the con-floor, and to celebrate the end of the convention season in style on the dance-floor!

2014’s party marks at the mid-point of the convention weekend, and as well as Team Thought Bubble (and special guest) DJs spinning tunes until the early hours, we’ve joined forces with Fanomenon to bring some spectacular visuals to the proceedings with anime and cult films projected throughout the evening, beginning with a special screening of the brilliant musical anime Daft Punk’s Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem!

This year’s DJ squad includes: Boo Cook, Al Ewing, Lee Garbett, Kieron Gillen, Antony Johnston, Jamie McKelvie, and Laura Snapes.

If you missed out on a party ticket this year then you may still be able to get one. Any unwanted tickets/returns will be available on the door at the Town Hall on the evening of the party. Tickets will be allocated on a first come, first served basis, priced at £5 with cash sales only.
