As part of Thought Bubble 2015, in partnership with Leeds Inspired, step inside your favourite stories or make your own! See photo booths like no other as you join superheroes, tackle mad scientists, or become them!

Working with artist Tom Eglington, who created last year’s Kodama Woods project, with assistance from students at Leeds College of Art, Get Into Comics is a series of interactive booths that allows you to enter into an oversized comic panel and create your own story. Classic war stories, smokey detective noir mysteries, shadowy graveyard horror and action packed superhero scenes – there’ll be something for everyone! Look out for our comic boxes across Leeds in October and at the Thought Bubble convention on 14-15 November at Leeds Dock.

Upload photos and videos to Twitter, Instagram and Vine with the #GetIntoComics and #TBF15 hashtags – the best entries will win prizes donated by Travelling Man Stores! The Get Into Comics project was made possible by a generous grant from Leeds Inspired, an initiative of Leeds City Council that funds cultural projects that create high quality, accessible cultural experiences for Leeds’ residents and visitors alike.

Comics & Mental Health

Room 2 at The Carriageworks Theatre, The Electric Press, 3 Millennium Square, Leeds, LS2 3AD, 18:00-19:30, 16+, FREE

Is there something about comics and graphic novels that make them particularly effective when telling stories about people with mental health difficulties? That’s one of the questions that will be discussed at this special event, presented in partnership with Arts & Minds.

Two artists will discuss their books, you will have a chance to share your thoughts and there will be an opportunity to share work and meet like-minded people. Elaine Will is a cartoonist and illustrator from the wilds of Canada. She holds a BA in Illustration from The Arts University College at Bournemouth in the UK and has recently been awarded the Xeric Award for her original mental illness drama Look Straight Ahead.

Darryl Cunningham is a Yorkshire based cartoonist, author of many books, most recently Supercrash. His book Psychiatric Tales was partly inspired by his years spent working as a health care assistant on an acute psychiatric ward, as well as his own experience with acute depression.

The event will be hosted by Tom Bailey, who helps run Arts & Minds, a Leeds network of people interested in creativity and mental health. Tom is also a freelance illustrator.

Please bring your own work if you wish to share it, and there will be a selection of books and comics related to the issue of mental health to browse, kindly donated by Travelling Man Stores.

TB 2015 Festival Spotlights: Mid-Con Party by thoughtbubblefestival

It’s one month to go until this year’s Thought Bubble Festival, which means we’ve released this year’s jam-packed programme out into the wild! The full rundown of events can be found here, and we wanted to give a special highlight to the tickets going on sale for this year’s mid-con party, so that nobody misses out on the chance to attend.

As with last year’s Saturday night mid-con party, to make sure everyone who wants to come to the event can get in, and to cover the licensing and insurance costs, there will be a small charge for tickets. We need to be able to keep track of attendance numbers for safety purposes, so we kindly ask that guests, exhibitors and members of the general public that wish to attend purchase a ticket using the process detailed below.

Party tickets will be going on sale at midday on Thursday 15th October, at this page, for the cost of £5. Entry to the party will also require either a weekend convention wristband or an exhibitor wristband/convention guest pass, so please make sure only to buy a party ticket if you have (or will have) one of these to accompany you to the event on the Saturday night.

partyslider

This year’s party will be taking place Saturday 14th November, and will be held at the historic Leeds Corn Exchange from 8pm until (very) late! The perfect way to unwind after a hectic day on the con floor – we’ll have the drinks and music flowing all evening, with the help of our crack squad of special guest DJs, so help us celebrate another Thought Bubble in style!

Please bear in mind that numbers are always very limited for this event, and tickets are likely to sell out quickly. We will have a very limited number available on the door on the evening of the event (for cash sales only), but these will be allocated on a first-come first-served policy, and we don’t want to have to turn people away at the door!

It’s also important to note that this event is strictly over-18s only, so please remember to bring photo ID with you along with your ticket and wristband/guest pass.

We’ll be highlighting some more events on the blog as the days until Thought Bubble 2015 tick away, so keep your eyes peeled to get the lowdown on some amazing fun to be had in Leeds this November!
